Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett is an award-winning psychologist and nationally recognized expert on anxiety disorders among African Americans. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters on the topic and her research is cited in the Surgeon General’s report on Mental Health: Culture, Race, and Ethnicity. Dr. Barnett is the recipient of grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health, Ohio Children’s Trust Fund, Ohio Commission on Minority Health, Ohio Board of Regents, and the Health Priorities Trust Fund.

A recipient of the American Psychological Association’s Kenneth and Mamie Clark Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Professional Development of Ethnic Minority Graduate Students, Dr. Barnett also served on the faculty of the Harvard-NIH-Kellogg funded Next Generation Project. She directs the Kent State University Psychology Group, a program designed to give undergraduates of color the knowledge, skills, and attitude to succeed in graduate school.

A sought-after workshop presenter, Dr. Barnett has spoken for national conferences, endowed lecture series, panel discussions, and professional groups around the country. Her work has been featured in national magazines and on national television including CNN and BET. A tenured member of the psychology faculty at Kent State University, she is also the CEO and Founder of Rise, Sally, Rise, Inc, a business dedicated to helping women and children overcome anxiety and fear from a psychological, spiritual, and Black perspective. Simon & Schuster will publish Dr. Barnett’s latest book on anxiety, fear, and African American women in September 2003. Her interactive CD-ROM, Believe and Succeed: Applying and getting into Graduate School for Students of Color was launched in November.


Dr. Neal-Barnett received her B.A. from Mount Union College (Alliance, Ohio), and both her M.A. and Ph.D. from DePaul University (Chicago). She also completed a renowned postdoctoral fellowship in anxiety disorders at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Neal-Barnett is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care, Who’s Who among African Americans, Who’s Who in Business and Industry, and Outstanding Americans. This summer, Northern Ohio Live Magazine named her one of the 500 most influential women in Northeastern Ohio.
