Sister Circles
(A workshop for Employee Assistance, Mental Health and Social
Service Professionals)
Occasional feelings of unease, anxiety, or fear can be normal
healthy responses to life events. When such feelings begin to
dominate one’s thoughts, they may signify a psychological disorder.
In the African American community, women who suffer from anxiety,
panic, and fear are often characterized as worrywarts or having
bad nerves. Because they often feel pressure to maintain their
historical roles as pillars of strength in their family and
community, many African American women won’t acknowledge their
fears. Instead, they learn to cope with and hide their feelings.
Health Care professionals are just beginning to recognize the
specific needs of this population and develop therapeutic methods
and strategies-like Sister Circles-to help address them
In this workshop your staff will learn:
1. How prevailing stereotypes of African American women contribute
to the perception and manifestation of anxiety disorders in
this population
2. How work and life issues can trigger feelings of anxiety,
panic, and fear
3. How to plan and maintain a Sister Circle by establishing
guiding principles, screening potential members and supporting
each woman during her journey
